The amazing part is that it can convert my cursive. It supports offline handwriting recognition, and it can do it in multiple languages. The notetaking app is also amazing in its own right. It also supports multiple offline dictionaries, including English-to-English, English-to-Russian and others. They are saved and are persistent after closing and reopening, but they do not appear to alter the original file.Īs mentioned earlier, the Boox e-reader also supports TTS (text to speech) but I hope they add more/better voices. I do not know how these edits and annotations are stored. Here, as an example, I have edited a page of a CBR. The Boox e-reader has opened all of them, and, once they are opened in that e-reader, it means you can write on them. I have tried the following file formats: PDF, EPUB, CHM, CBZ and CBR. You'll use the pen mostly in Boox's notetaking section and in Boox's e-reader. The Reddit app runs on it.Įven Youtube videos play on it at its "fastest" (slowest?) refresh rate setting, "X mode". The pen will not work on most Android apps, but most Android apps are touch- and virtual keyboard- based. The Boox supports the Android app ecosystem. Some people find it nice to have some background music while they sketch or write, or they could play an unabridged audiobook while reading the ebook at the same time (that's better than the text-to-speech, which the Boox can also do, especially with the limited available TTS voices - you can choose between a very Chinese-accented English voice or a robotic English voice). RMs have neither bluetooth nor speakers, so there is no audio support. The result is sometimes, when playing back music with random playback, it lands on and plays a random chapter of audiobook. However, the Boox music app does not discern between music files it finds from audiobook files, even though I put them in separate root folders. What can the Boox do that the RM2 cannot? I am currently playing back music through bluetooth earbuds from the Boox while writing this reply. Onyx has been sending out software updates back to the original Nova (2 years ago), but an Android 9 update had been advertised everywhere (e.g., Amazon) for pre-Nova2 devices, and that has yet to materialize. People shelling out the money for these want at least a few years of real support behind them. Having fast product development cycles can be bad however, if there is inadequate support for past products. It's a bit too much of a coincidence to me that the Note Air has the same form factor as RM2 and is unlike any of the rest of the Boox line and has a unibody aluminum case, again unlike any of the rest of the Boox line. It would not surprise me if someone from Onyx saw a photo of an RM2 and had this similar design ready to go in months. Their product development is so fast, and their software support seems pretty good with updates and releases. The pixels are just larger on the 10" devices (lower PPI, pixels per inch), so the 8" devices look crisper but the 10" devices allow working with slightly better precision, as it's like working with a 25% zoom-in with larger work area vs the 8". The thing there though is that, whether 8" or 10", it's still the same number of pixels. (It was between that and the RM1 for a temp sub-$300 solution, but the bullies here left a bad taste, honestly.) The Nova Pro has reinforced to me that 8" is still the perfect reading size (from ownership of iPad vs iPad Mini), but writing would benefit from the extra 2", just from the standpoint of seemingly usable writing space. If you have specific questions, I can answer from the perspective of having messed around with that for a couple of weeks. The Nova Pro is the version prior to the Nova 2 and came out last year (March 2019) and it is exactly the same size as my iPad Mini. Meanwhile, I found a deal on a like-new Nova Pro to use in the interim and get my feet wet. I found out that larger sized color eInk displays will be releasing next year, so I am going to wait until then and see how they are. You might want to also post to r/ereaderĪnyway I am still looking at eInk devices, particularly in the 10" sizes. The answers you receive here will lean towards RM, and the posts that aren't glowing about RM tend to get downvoted and therefore sometimes hidden. Something to be noted is that this is quite a bit like a fan-site (which is typical of Reddit), and I think some RM employees might also be lurking here. I was in your place a little while ago, looking at devices and doing research in different places, including here.
